The Montessori Adolescent Programme

Adolescence is characterised by profound physical transformation, social vulnerability, and the search for personal identity. The adolescent requires practical, real-world experiences to build psychological and emotional stability, self-reliance, and economic awareness within a supportive community. The Erdkinder program offers a dynamic balance between meaningful academic study and practical experience involving production and exchange, money management, marketing and

At Vivek High School, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Our Montessori Adolescent Programme for Classes 7 and 8, inspired by Montessori’s Erdkinder vision, responds to adolescents’ growing need for independence, a sense of belonging and opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to their community. Through purposeful work, real-world experiences and interdisciplinary projects integrating Science, Social Science, Mathematics, English and Art, students connect their learning to authentic situations and discover how knowledge can be applied in everyday life.

The programme offers diverse opportunities for meaningful work, including carpentry, crochet, wall murals, hydroponics, vegetable production, culinary experiences and community service. Whether growing vegetables, preparing food, making useful products or creating shared spaces, students undertake work that contributes to the life of their community. Café Basil Leaf, our student-run café, is a particularly enriching example of this approach. Students contribute to designing its identity and menu, conduct taste trials, prepare and serve food, calculate costs and understand overheads, pricing and profits. Through these shared responsibilities, they experience how their decisions and efforts affect others. Initiatives such as the Exchange Shop further encourage them to explore sustainability, sharing and responsible consumption. Across these experiences, students develop an understanding of the relationships between work, resources, costs and the value of what they produce, while considering the importance of fairness, responsible choices and service to others.

At its heart, the programme connects knowledge with life and learning with meaningful contribution. Students encounter Mathematics through measurement and budgeting, Science through growing and sustainability, Art through the creation of shared spaces, and communication and collaboration through working with others. They come to recognise the dignity of work, appreciate the contributions of others and understand that their efforts have value and that their community can depend on them. We aim to prepare young people not merely for their next stage of education, but to participate thoughtfully, confidently and responsibly in the world.
