Planting Seeds of Learning, Nurturing a Lifetime of Growth: Three Year Kindergarten Programme - Ages 3-6

Child-centric Educational Approach:

In the Primary stage, children transition from absorbing their environment to organising, classifying, and understanding it. Possessing an active, conscious absorbent mind, the 3-to-6-year-old refines functional independence, logical thinking, and fine motor precision, while expanding their capacity for sustained concentration. The Primary environment offers a beautifully planned, mixed-age community equipped with self-correcting Montessori materials, enabling children to internalise self-discipline, respect, and intrinsic motivation.

In Vivek High, we believe in the power of hands-on, experiential learning as an essential pathway to the holistic development of every child, allowing them to blossom not only academically but also socially, emotionally and physically, in the formative years of 3 to 6 years of age. Children actively engage in their nurturing learning environments, work purposefully with the classroom materials and make meaningful connections between their experiences and the world around them. This child-centric educational approach plants seeds of learning and nurtures a lifetime of growth in the formative years as during this period, children have the ability to effortlessly absorb everything from their surroundings in totality including movement, language, order and social behaviour, contributing to the development of their personality and understanding of the world. Children possess strong interest and exceptional inclination towards acquiring specific skills and abilities. The Montessori curriculum recognises these windows of opportunity, supporting the child’s natural path of development.

Prepared Environment:

Each Kindergarten environment is thoughtfully organised, with child-sized furniture and purposeful materials arranged aesthetically and placed within easy reach of children. The environment allows children the freedom to move, make independent choices and engage in meaningful work for as long as they desire and develop skills at their own pace. Every aspect of the environment is designed to encourage exploration, concentration, independence and a sense of order, while nurturing responsibility and meeting the developmental needs of children.

Mixed Age Group:

Children of mixed ages work and learn together in the same Montessori environment, creating a harmonious classroom community. Younger children learn by observing the work of older peers, drawing inspiration from their work and gradually acquiring new skills. Older children assist their younger peers and consolidate their understanding of concepts through explanation and demonstration. This coexistence fosters cooperation and nurtures patience, empathy, leadership and mutual respect among children.

Freedom Within Limits:

Freedom within limits is a cornerstone of Montessori philosophy. Children are given the freedom to choose their work and purposefully repeat activities that meet their developmental needs, while respecting the workspace of others and maintaining the decorum of the classroom. Within the framework of freedom with responsibility, they learn to regulate their behaviour, respect the personal space of others and take responsibility for the decisions made by them.

Development of Will:

The development of the will is a gradual process through which children learn to act consciously and make purposeful decisions. In Vivek High Kindergarten environments, the will is strengthened through freedom of choice to engage in purposeful work, voluntary repetition of desired activities, ample opportunities to make independent decisions, working with focus, perseverance and self-discipline.

Trained Faculty:

Two AMI-trained educators guide each environment. The same educators continue nurturing the children throughout their three years journey in Kindergarten. Familiarity with children enables the educators to build thoughtfully on the prior learning of children. They ignite the natural curiosity in young minds by providing a meticulously prepared environment where the children can explore, discover and learn. They maintain the environment and provide ample opportunities to work with scientifically designed Montessori equipment, helping children to gain meaningful life experiences. Through careful observation, they understand interests and developmental needs of children under their care and plan their lessons accordingly, introducing new challenges at the appropriate time.

Areas of Learning:

Each Montessori Kindergarten environment is mindfully organised into distinct areas, each offering carefully selected materials that support the development of specific skills in children and help them to explore, learn and thrive.

The Practical Life area connects learning with everyday experiences of care of self and care of environment. Through purposeful activities, children refine their movements, develop concentration, gain independence and cultivate a sense of responsibility. Snack preparation is an integral part of Practical Life, where children participate in activities such as peeling, chopping, grating and mixing ingredients to prepare the class snack, fostering a sense of community. Educators also model and demonstrate grace and courtesy, helping children learn to interact with others with kindness, respect and consideration.

The Sensorial area helps children further refine their senses and make meaningful distinctions in the world around them. Through working with scientifically designed materials, children explore and discriminate between dimensions such as size, length and form, as well as colours, sounds and textures. By comparing, grading, matching and classifying objects, they develop sensory perception, sharpen their power of observation and build a foundation for later learning in Mathematics, Geometry and Language.

The Language area nurtures communication and literacy during the formative Kindergarten years. A carefully designed progression of activities is planned for all three languages, English, Hindi and Punjabi, allowing children to develop their language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through hands-on experiences. Work begins in the very first year with classified pictures on diverse topics to enrich vocabulary through classroom conversations, storytelling sessions, songs and poems. Sandpaper Letters help children with letter-recognition and sound-association, while activities in Practical Life and work with Metal Insets help to develop hand control and strengthen pincer grip, thus preparing the hand for writing. Children then progress to expressing their thoughts using the Moveable Alphabet, forming words, phrases and sentences and gradually develop fluent reading and correct letter formations by the third year. The Reading Corner in the language area is a comfortable and relaxing place where children explore books which pique their interest.

The Mathematics area introduces numerical concepts through concrete materials. By manipulating these materials, children develop an understanding of number recognition and value association and build skills in mathematical operations of addition and subtraction. They practice linear and skip counting and memorize essential number combinations including different ways to make ten. The fractions material provides a sensorial impression of fractional quantities, enabling children to discover equivalence and gradually develop an understanding of fractions. Through hands-on work with manipulative materials, children progress to understanding complex computations of multiplication and division. These concrete experiences support their gradual progression towards abstract thinking.

The Cultural area in our Kindergarten Montessori environments broadens children’s understanding of the world around them through Geography, History, Celebration of Festivals and Special Days, Botany and Zoology, Art, Music, Dance and Dramatics.

Outdoor exploration including nature walk, gardening, freeplay in the swing and sandpit area, active sports and games, breathing exercises and yoga, are also an integral part of our Kindergarten environments.

Cultivates Lifelong Love for Learning:

In the Kindergarten years in Vivek High, concepts are introduced through concrete materials that children can touch, manipulate and explore before gradually progressing towards abstract learning. Academic learning is interwoven with the development of independence, social responsibility, emotional maturity and practical life skills. Children are encouraged to think for themselves, make purposeful choices, solve problems and approach new experiences with confidence. Learning becomes an active and joyful process rooted in discovery and connected to everyday life. As children complete their Kindergarten journey, they carry forward much more than academic knowledge. They step into their Elementary environment with curiosity, confidence, a growing sense of responsibility and the ability to contribute positively to their community. These formative years plant the seeds of independent thought, purposeful action and a lifelong love of learning.
